Thanksgiving Holiday in McMurdo

studyearth

We thought we would be at West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) Divide Camp by the Thanksgiving holiday, but poor weather with cloud cover and less than ideal visibility in West Antarctica continues to delay our travel. The WAIS Divide Camp staff need to set up camp first, and then our team can travel to WAIS Divide and onwards to our Thwaites Glacier Eastern Shear Margin field sites. Fingers crossed for improvements to the weather this week.

We are looking forward to getting out to the field, and in the meantime, we are grateful to be in a comfortable place with excellent company, heated buildings, and a delicious Thanksgiving holiday feast! Most of McMurdo Station had a 2-day weekend with a festive dinner on Saturday. Thank you so much to the McMurdo galley staff, and all those who contributed to the special dinner and other fun events like the Turkey Trot this weekend! Happy Thanksgiving!

The project is trying to better understand the response of the glacier to changes in climate and the contributions to sea level rise of this collapsing glacier.
