U.K. Team Lead, Seismologist

Emma Smith

Emma Smith, Ph.D., is geophysicist and glaciologist, investigating ice dynamics using active and passive seismic techniques. As part of the ITGC TIME team she will focus on the acquisition and processing of 3-D reflection seismic data over the eastern shear margin of Thwaites Glacier, in order to determine the stability and properties of this key glaciological boundary.

Seismologist

Ronan Agnew

Ronan Agnew is a geophysicist and glaciologist in the 3rd year of his PhD at the University of Leeds. He is using new seismic techniques to improve our understanding of the physical properties of glacier ice and glacier beds. He will be assisting in the field as part of the TIME team.

U.S. Team Lead, Seismologist

Marianne Karplus

Marianne Karplus, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Earth, Environmental, and Resource Sciences at The University of Texas at El Paso. Her research involves using seismology to study the structure and dynamics of glaciers and the solid Earth. For the TIME project, Marianne investigates seismic recordings of glacial processes to better understand the environment at the Eastern Shear Margin of Thwaites Glacier. With the TIME team, she is also designing active-source seismic surveys to image Thwaites Glacier during future (expected 2022-23) field seasons.

Radar Geophysicist

Tun Jan Young

TJ Young, Ph.D. is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on using a variety of field-based geophysical techniques to investigate the dynamics of ice sheets. In TIME, TJ develops and applies novel polarimetric methods to a variety of deployed radar systems to characterize the englacial ice anisotropic fabric and subglacial properties at the Thwaites Eastern Shear Margin. From these investigations, TJ will shed light on the physical properties of shear margins that enable streaming flow.

Ice Sheet Modeler

Paul Summers

Paul Summers is a 4th year PhD candidate at Stanford University working with Jenny Suckale. His research focuses on numerical modeling to understand the mechanics of ice dynamics. He is particularly interested in investigating the controls on shear margin location. For this field season he is also working with Stanford Radio Glaciology and assisting with their planned radar surveys.

Radar Geophysicist and Seismologist

Daniel May

Daniel May is a 1st year Geophysics PhD student in the Stanford University Radio Glaciology group working with Dustin Schroeder. His previous research has focused on using seismic methods to monitor lake-ice properties in the Swiss Alps. As part of this field season, he will help carry out geophysical surveys to study the Thwaites Glacier. In his future research, he hopes to use radar observations to better understand the hydrologic processes of Earth’s ice shelves.

Field Safety Coordinator

Mike Roberts

Mike is a Kiwi IFMGA Mountain Guide who found his calling climbing, skiing and guiding mountains worldwide. Antarctica has been a constant draw for Mike who has spent many seasons working with glaciologists and geologists through the United States Antarctic Program. He first become involved with TIME during a safety reconnaissance flight in the 2018-19 season and subsequently completed two seasons working on another project in the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (ITGC). Prior to this, he visited TIME field locations during a skidoo traverse based around seismic and GPS studies.

Field Safety Coordinator

Kirah Solomon

Kirah Solomon is a mountain guide who earned expedition experience in Alaska and Argentina before fulfilling a decades-long dream to work in Antarctica. With the United States Antarctic Program, her work included skiing glaciers in the Dry Valleys with the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) team, teaching Antarctic Field Safety at the South Pole, traversing to Minna Bluff with the Rapid Access Ice Drill (RAID) team, flying to the Dellbridge Islands with a team studying Weddell seals, and now, traversing by snowmobile with TIME. Prior to this field season she was a member of the Joint Antarctic Search and Rescue Team (JASART).

TIME is a collaborative project involving many scientists at seven universities including University of California Santa Cruz, Stanford University, University of Oklahoma, MIT, University of Texas at El Paso, Cambridge University (UK), and Leeds University (UK). 

The primary Principal Investigators for the entire project are Slawek Tulacyzk (Univ. of California at Santa Cruz) and Poul Christoffersen (Cambridge University).

TIME is part of the larger International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (ITGC), which includes eight NSF-NERC-funded science projects to study Thwaites Glacier, Antarctica. For more information about ITGC, check out the ITGC website

Thwaites Interdisciplinary Margin Evolution (TIME) is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Environment Research Council (NERC) to study the Eastern Shear Margin of Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica. The project is trying to better understand the response of the glacier to changes in climate and the contributions to sea level rise of this collapsing glacier.
